Black and White Landscapes
Black and white photography gives the photographer a unique ability to guide the viewer’s emotions through light, tone and form. Robin also weaves infrared photography into his workflow. On this page, traditional monochrome and infrared imagery merge into a cohesive, atmospheric body of work, often blurring the boundaries between the natural world and the cities we inhabit. Mono Photography
This collection of landscape photography photos in Black and White, brings together images from across the UK and around the world, each image is chosen for its atmosphere, structure, and emotional appeal. Stripped of colour, these scenes rely entirely on tone, texture, and light. This is the essential language of mono photography. From the wild coasts and highlands of Britain to distant mountains and forests abroad, this collection explores the world in its most timeless form. Ansel Adams is quoted as saying “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” I hope you can see from these images, that the effort has been made to find and see the image and then show this to the viewer. This is what mono photography is all about.
Some of these photographs have been recognised in national competitions, with others commended on the international stage. They represent a side of my landscapes photography that is both technical and deeply expressive. Mono photography allows me to focus on composition and mood. However, it is the skills in the darkroom, and printing process, that bring these images to life framed and on the wall
A particular strength within this portfolio lies in my use of black and white photography landscape infrared techniques, which captures wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum, transforming familiar scenes into sometimes otherworldly places with dark skies, glowing foliage, and a dreamlike quality that blurs the line between realism and imagination. It’s a process that demands precision and patience, but the results offer a unique emotional resonance. (click here to see my infrared blog post)
In more recent years, some of these works have diverged from pure landscape and moved into cityscapes, exploring the geometry of the architecture, within the urban environment. These images share the same emphasis on atmosphere and light, extending my black and white work into new, modern contexts. More recently, I have been experimenting with monochrome photos for my street photography as I push my boundaries.
